From 1966: served in numerous positions in the KGB.

1970: Graduated from the Higher School of the KGB with the title Vice Admiral. Diplomatic rank: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation. Class 1 Active State Advisor of the Russian Federation. 

1991–1996: Deputy Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation.

1996–1998: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

1998–1999: Head of the Government Executive Office of the Russian Federation. Minister of the Russian Federation

1999–2003: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Lithuania.

2003–2004: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Moldova.

2004–2011: Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
