On February 25, 2014 Northern (Arctic) Federal University opened an international Winter School “Model Arctic Council” (MAC) aimed to reproduce the activities of the Arctic states within the Council. The participants included master’s degree holders and post-graduate students from the University and its U.S., Norwegian, Swedish and Canadian partners, as well as young experts from such non-Arctic countries as Indonesia and Thailand.

The opening session was addressed by RIAC Deputy Program Director Timur Makhmutov, who stated that RIAC Summer School “A Roadmap for International Cooperation in the Arctic” held jointly with the University in summer 2012 in Arkhangelsk had become a critical step for organizing the MAC. Several participants of RIAC’s School have been actively engaged in preparations of the NArFU project. Moreover, MAC webpage incorporates RIAC’s A+Standard recommendations.

During the first day of the Winter School, many experts emphasized the importance of interactive resources for knowledge and information diffusion about processes related to the Arctic region. In this context, it is necessary to recognize the significance of the RIAC training held at the University in early February and aimed at the NArFU’s website development.

University Rector Helena Kudryashova underlined the obvious success of cooperation between NArFU and RIAC at a meeting with Dr. Makhmutov, where they also discussed key areas for advancing the partnership, in particular on the Arctic and its development.
