On December, 3, 2024, RIAC hosted a roundtable titled US-China Competition: Opportunities for Russia. The discussion featured the presentation of an eponymous book produced by the authors of the Center for Applied Analysis of Global Transformations (CAAGT) of RUDN University and edited by Denis Degterev.

The book examines theoretical approaches to analyzing global competition and explores the phenomena of new bipolarity and power transit from Western to non-Western countries. It reviews Sino-American competition in trade and economy, technologies, politics, military capacity, and institutions. The authors pay special attention to Russia's growing role in world politics and provide recommendations for relevant ministries and state agencies on establishing a center of power alternative to the West.

Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director General, and Vitaly Danilin, CAAGT Director, delivered opening remarks. Denis Degterev, Professor and Leading Researcher of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Professor of School of International Affairs at HSE University, Professor of the Department of World Economy at MGIMO University, presented the book. The opening session featured Andrey Vinogradov, Head of the Center for Contemporary China Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS, Editor-in-Chief of the Far Eastern Affairs and reviewer of the book; as well as Mirzet Ramich, CAAGT Coordinator, Assistant Professor of the Department of Theory and History of International Relations at RUDN University. Denis Kalashnikov, Associate Professor of the Department of World Economy at MGIMO University, chaired the session.

The first session on theoretical approaches to new world order studies included presentations by Maksim Kharkevich, Associate Professor at the Department of World Politics, MGIMO University; Vladimir Scherbunov, Lecturer at the Department of Applied International Analysis, MGIMO University; Maria Gorbunova, Head of International Economics and Customs Affairs Department at Lobachevsky State University; and Vitalii Meliantsev, Corresponding Member of RAS, Professor and Head of the Department of International Economic Relations of Asian and African Countries, Institute of Asian and African Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University. Andrey Karneev, Professor and Head of the School of Asian Studies at HSE University; Evgeny Grachikov, CAAGT Program Director, Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and History of International Relations at RUDN University; and Oksana Morgunova, Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and History of International Relations at RUDN University joined the discussion. The debate was moderated by Denis Degterev and Igor Istomin, Acting Head of the Department of Applied Analysis of International Problems at MGIMO University.

In the second session, experts focused on practical manifestations of US-China competition, as well as on Russia’s role in this. The speaker list featured Sergei Avakyants, Director of the IInstitute for Global Military Economics and Strategy at HSE University; Vassily Kashin, Director of the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies at HSE University and RIAC member; Petr Yakovlev, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Latin America RAS; Elena Zinovieva, Professor of the Department of World Politics at MGIMO University; Julia Melnikova, RIAC Program Manager; Semyon Basinskikh, Junior Researcher at the Center for Scientific and Analytical Information at the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS. The discussion was also attended by Yury Kulintsev, Deputy Youth Policy Director and Head of the Center for World Politics and Strategic Analysis at the Institute of China and Modern Asia RAS; Ekaterina Arapova, Deputy Dean for Research and International Cooperation at the Faculty of International Relations, MGIMO University; Ivan Danilin, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) RAS; Valeriy Makhnin, Chief Researcher at the Military Institute (National Defense Control) of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia; Alexey Stepanov, Senior Researcher at the Center for Military and Political Research, Institute for the U.S. and Canadian Studies RAS; Andrey Shelepov, Senior Researcher at the Center for International Institutions Research, Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (CIIR RANEPA); Andrey Sakharov, CIIR RANEPA Researcher. The debate was moderated by Victoria Zhuravleva, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at IMEMO RAS, and Evgeny Grachikov.
