Instead of a new Cold War, someday we could face a real, large-scale military conflict
Since the crisis in Ukraine began, many have claimed that a new Cold War between Russia and the West already exists. This rhetoric, used even by high-profile politicians, in my opinion, is driven mostly by emotions and is meant to justify difficult positions taken by one or the other side.
I am convinced that no Cold War of the type we experienced in the second half of the 20th century can be repeated today....

A real cold war is still far away but the sides are working hard to make it happen
As it comes to a close, the year 2014 has seen relations between Russia and the collective West reach an emotional level if not seen during the time of the Cold War, then certainly during the periods of detente. Hence, close attention is being paid to any sort of military activities, with the Western media focused on the allegedly increasing intensity of Russian air force missions. Among other works published, in...
Without values and ideological guidelines, any pragmatic activity carried out by a country resembles “rats in the garbage”
For over 20 years the idea of building a Greater Europe has been a significant landmark along the way to cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic region. However, building a Greater Europe faces at least three fundamental problems:
1. How best to resolve the “security dilemma” between Russia and NATO, as well as that between Russia and the Euro-Atlantic community as a whole?...

Tatyana Parkhalina, Dmitry Danilov and Andrey Baikov discuss the situation
NATO and Kiev representatives are to meet in Brussels on 2–3 December 2014 for political consultations on Ukraine’s full membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. But how realistic is such a discussion in the light of the current internal and foreign policy challenges facing the Kiev authorities? What is the likelihood of a clear and final positive decision being made with regard to Ukraine’s membership...

Interview with Ian Kearns
Recently the European Leadership Network issued an intriguing
report
analyzing military encounters between Russian and West in 2014 after the onset of the Ukrainian crisis. The RIAC team asked Dr. Ian Kearns, ELN Director, to shed some light on the methodology and tools used to create the report. Some questions on the period of the Cold War and the future of Russian-Western military coexistence also arose.
The first question is about the methodology of your research....
Russia Needs a Step Forward
Although Moscow's official documents and statements consider Hanoi a key Asian partner, the reality of the bilateral relationship after the breakup of the USSR has actually been inertia, thereby opening opportunities for the U.S.A. and the People's Republic of China (PRC) to gain a strong foothold in Vietnam. With Russia once again intent on achieving a meaningful presence in Asia-Pacific, it appears appropriate to analyze the role of a strategic partnership with Vietnam...
