Graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). Holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics. Doctor of Sciences (History), professor.
Worked at the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1988, co-founder of the USSR Institute of Europe; held the position of Deputy Director of said institute. Since 2006, Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the Higher School of Economics National Research University.
Member of the Council on Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs (RF MFA). Member of academic consultancy teams under the RF Security Council. Chairman of the Presidium of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy. Member of the Council for the Promotion of Civic Society Institutions and Human Rights under the RF President. Member of the expert council of Vnesheconombank.
Member of the Trilateral Commission, the leading organization of influential citizens of the USA and North America, Western Europe and Asia, and member of other international organizations. Member of executive bodies and head of several academic and charity organizations and scientific councils.
Founder and chairman of the editorial board of the Russia in Global Affairs journal.
Author and primary editor of 22 books and brochures, and of 450 articles published in Russia and abroad.
Academic focus: issues of world economy, foreign policy and arms control; strategies of national security, foreign and military policy of Russia, and its national security.
