11-12 June 2014 — Global Zero convened a high-level conference in Rome on a Middle
East WMD-free zone, bringing together government officials, former officials and experts
from the Middle East and elsewhere in partnership with the Russian International Affairs
Council. We support the ongoing efforts to convene a conference in Helsinki regarding the creation
of such a zone, as called for by the 2010 NPT Review Conference.
We encourage developments in the region that can help to set the groundwork for a Middle
East WMD-free zone, such as the P5+1 negotiations with Iran, and other contributions to
peace and stability in the region.
The United States and Russia should also resume dialogue and negotiations on further
reductions to their nuclear arms.

At the meeting, participants engaged in frank discussions and a thorough exchange of ideas for establishing a Middle East WMD-free zone.

Global Zero takes seriously its responsibility to provide expert analysis, such as means of WMD-verification and other issues to which it can contribute, and to provide a unique and constructive forum for leaders and experts to convene and candidly discuss the issues.
Global Zero will remain in close contact with various groups, governments and nongovernmental organizations and those representing the next generation of young leaders who will be central to the success of a WMD-free zone in the region.
We deeply appreciate the wide attendance and extensive participation in the Rome conference and will consider convening future conferences to advance this goal.
