On January 26, 2015, the Volketing held conference “Current Relations between Russia, Ukraine and European Union” organized by the Danish Helsinki Committee with courteous assistance of Zenia Stampe, legislator from the Social Liberal Party. The event was attended by RIAC Program Manager Ekaterina Chimiris, who presented Ukraine- and Europe-related projects of RIAC (measures to build Greater Europe before 2030, new East Europe – situation analysis and Russia’s strategic positioning in CEE, Baltic and European edge of the post-Soviet space) and the situation assessment through the prism of the theory of political processes.

During her speech she raised a number of sensitive problems including the causes of the confidence crisis among the conflicting sides and international forces, the conflict through the eyes of Russia and Russian political elite, and scenarios for resolution of the current hot phase.
Other reports came from Taras Kononenko, Professor of Taras Shevchenko University, Kiev (Ukrainian identity); Kim Frederiksen of the University of Copenhagen (sliding to the Cold War), and journalist Peter Wiewel (German vision of the conflict).
The debaters also touched upon unbiased coverage of events, the nation’s right for self-determination, and additional steps for a peaceful settlement in Eastern Ukraine.
