On January 20, 2014 the Russian International Affairs Council held a round table “A New Agenda for Russia-Iran Relations.” When opening the debate, RIAC President Igor Ivanov underlined that the situation around Iran is approaching a new stage, which inevitably affects the bilateral relations. In this context, Russia is to clearly determine its long-term interests. It is vital that Moscow properly outline its priorities to render the cooperation between Russia and Iran equally beneficial. It requires a more active civil society and expert dialogue, educational institutions cooperation along with joint efforts in information area. The participants discussed the situation around Iran’s nuclear issue, future trade and economic cooperation, possible interaction in the Caspian, potential joint efforts on Afghanistan and Iraq as well as other ways of improving and deepening the bilateral dialogue.

The event was attended by Vladimir Yurtayev, Professor at the Department of Theory and History of International Relations at Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, member of the European Society for Iranian Studies; Yuri Belobrov, Senior Researcher at the Center for Global Problems and International Organizations at the Institute of Contemporary International Studies of Diplomatic Academy of Russian Foreign Ministry; Andrey Volodin, leading research fellow at RAS Institute of World Economy and International Relations; Nikolay Kozyrev, Counselor at the Institute of Contemporary International Studies at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian MFA, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary; Eugeny Lankin, Director of Business Development of ZAVKOM Company; Vitaly Naumkin, Director of RAS Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS Corresponding Member; Vladimir Sazhin, Senior Researcher at RAS Institute of Oriental Studies, political observer at the Voice of Russia radio station; and Anton Khlopkov, Director of the Center for Energy and Security Studies, Editor-in-Chief of “Nuclear Club” journal.
Along with Dr. Ivanov, RIAC was represented by its Director General Andrey Kortunov and Program Director Ivan Timofeev.
The participants discussed the situation around Iran’s nuclear issue, future trade and economic cooperation, possible interaction in the Caspian, potential joint efforts on Afghanistan and Iraq as well as other ways of improving and deepening the bilateral dialogue.
