On October 21, 2024, an expert discussion “Emerging Contours of Arab Political Development” was held. Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) in cooperation with Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOS RAS) organized the meeting. The welcome remarks were delivered by Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Academic Director, and Vitaly Naumkin, IOS RAS President and RIAC Vice-President.

The substantive basis of the conference was the RIAC monography "Conversations about the Arab World: Politics, Power, Society". The book was presented by its authors: Aleksandr Aksenenok, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia, RIAC Vice-President, and Vasily Kuznetsov, Deputy Director for Science of the IOS RAS, RIAC Member.

During the discussion, participants discussed the impact of global political and economic processes on the countries of the Arab East. The experts exchanged views on the issues of state-building and political modernization in the Arab countries. The participants also addressed aspects related to the current state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the role of extra-regional actors.

The meeting was attended by leading experts on the Middle East. Irina Zvyagelskaya, Head of Center for the Middle East Studies of the IMEMO RAS, RIAC Member; Alexander Yakovlev, Chief Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of the IOS RAS; Andrey Evseenko, Deputy Director for Science of the Institute for U.S. and Canada Studies RAS, shared their views on the matter during the opening of the discussion.

The discussion was also attended by: Gennadi Tarasov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia; Vladimir Bartenev, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Strategic Studies of the HSE University; Boris Dolgov, Leading Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the IOS RAS; Lida Oganisyan, Associate Professor of the Department of International Organizations and Global Political Processes of the School of World Politics MSU; Ruslan Mamedov, Scientific Advisor of the Evgeny Primakov Center for International Cooperation, Senior Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the IOS RAS; Vladimir Sazhin, Senior Researcher at the Center for Middle East Studies of the IOS RAS; Nikolai Surkov, Senior Researcher of the Center for the Middle East Studies of the IMEMO RAS; Grigory Lukyanov Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the IOS RAS; Aida Petrosyan, Research Fellow at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the IOS RAS; and Independent Experts Alexey Khlebnikov, Kiril Semenov, and Anton Mardasov.
