On January 28-29, RIAC President Igor Ivanov met Ali Larijani, speaker of the Iranian Parliament, and Mohammad Zarif, Iran’s Foreign Minister, in Tehran. The parties expressed deep satisfaction over dynamic development of the bilateral multifaceted cooperation that is now facing new opportunities due to the constructive advancement of talks on the Iranian nuclear program. The ongoing negotiations are expected to bring about the removal of sanctions against Iran soon, which reflects the interests of strengthening the nonproliferation regime and stability in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf.

Emphasizing the importance of high-level dialogue for future Russian-Iranian relations, the participants of the meeting underlined the growing need for inter-parliamentary cooperation, business and scientific ties. To this end, Mr. Larijani confirmed his readiness to visit Russia soon on the invitation of Valentina Matvienko, Chairman of the Federation Council.
Bilateral cooperation and mutual understanding are getting increasingly dependent on contacts between representatives of civil society, science and expert communities. Dr. Ivanov was also invited to Center for International Research and Education (CIRE) to address a group of leading Iranian foreign policy scholars on current international and regional problems. The parties (RIAC and CIRE) have also reached an agreement for joint research in major areas of bilateral cooperation, as well as international and regional problems of mutual interest.
