On July 15, 2020, the International Crisis Group (ICG) held an expert discussion on security and development issues in the Horn of Africa in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, economic recession, and exacerbation of regional conflicts. The discussion focused on national models of social and political modernization, including in Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, the demographic prospects of these countries, opportunities and challenges for the development of democratic institutions, external debt, and a regional arms race.

Other topics included issues associated with the activity of external players, first of all, the confrontation between Turkey-Qatar coalition and the alliance of Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The event was attended by Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General.
