On December 16-17, 2013 an expert discussion devoted to establishing a positive agenda for the Russian-Turkish relations took place in Istanbul. This meeting was the second joint event in the framework of cooperation between the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Global Relations Forum (Turkey) and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
On December 16-17, 2013 an expert discussion devoted to establishing a positive agenda for the Russian-Turkish relations took place in Istanbul. This meeting was the second joint event in the framework of cooperation between the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Global Relations Forum (Turkey) and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Russian side was represented by Pyotr Stegny, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation and RIAC member; Irina Svistounova, Senior Research Fellow at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies; Liudmila Filippova, RIAC Program Manager.
During the meeting, the Russian and Turkish experts focused on discussing regional processes. The parties exchanged opinions about the recent developments in the “Arab spring” countries, situation in Syria and Libya, negotiations with Iran, cooperation between Russia and Turkey in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Particular attention was attached to the prospects for interstate cooperation within the triangle “Russia – EU – Turkey”.
The negotiations resulted in adopting a decision about more frequent expert discussions of the indicated issues and formulating joint proposals for renewing the Russian-Turkish agenda along with filling it with a positive content.
