On October 31 – November 1, 2019, Russian International Affairs Council in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union to Russia held a workshop “Participation of Russia and the European Union in International Forums”.
The discussions focused on the interaction between Russia and the EU on stability and peace issues in the Middle East and Africa, climate change and environmental protection, as well as cooperation between the European Union and Russia in the framework of economic and trade organizations, primarily the WTO and G20.
The workshop was attended by experts from Russia and the EU, permanent members of the group, as well as the invited relevant experts. The speakers at the opening plenary included Markus Ederer, Ambassador of the European Union to the Russian Federation; Alexander Aksenyonok, RIAC Vice-President, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia; Zabine Fischer (SWP, Berlin); Dmitry Balakin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia); Maxine David (Leiden University); Alexey Gromyko, Director of RAS Institute of Europe. RIAC was represented by Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, and Natalya Vyakhireva, RIAC Program Manager.
The workshop was part of the initiative on creation of EU-Russia expert network aimed at strengthening long-term cooperation between Russia and the EU.
As part of the project in 2017-2019 several round tables were held on various aspects of relations between Russia and the EU. The project is designed until the fall of 2020.
