On November 18–19, 2019, Cadenabbia (Italy) hosted a conference focusing on the issues of the Eastern Mediterranean and international affairs. The event was organized by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Başkent University (Turkey), and Near East University (Turkey).
Walter Glos, Director of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Turkey, and Ercan Çitlioğlu, Director of Strategic Studies Implementation and Research Centre of Başkent University, spoke at the opening of the conference. Reports were made by Kadir Varoğlu, Vice-President of Başkent University, and Murat Tüzünkan, Vice-Rector of Near East University. The event was attended by representatives of the expert and diplomatic communities of Russia, Germany, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, etc.
Within the six sessions of the conference, the participants discussed the post-conflict period in Syria and the new Middle East security architecture, regional and global consequences of US sanctions against Iran, mobilization based on identity, proxy war and alliances: Saudi-Iranian rivalry and the future of war and peace in the Middle East East, the rise of Russia in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean, Eurasian perspectives and Russia’s interests, EU approaches to regulate the migration crisis, challenges and opportunities for the development of energy projects in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Ruslan Mamedov, RIAC Program Coordinator, and Elena Alekseenkova, RIAC Expert, Head of RAS Center for Italian Studies, Associate Professor at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE, made reports at the meeting.
