On September 10, 2019, in Moscow, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), in cooperation with the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, held an international seminar “From Battlefields to Negotiation tables. What Role for International Actors in MENA Crises.” The goal of the seminar is to exchange views of Russian and foreign experts regarding the role and influence of regional and international actors in major crises affecting the Middle East and North Africa.
It is the second seminar RIAC is holding with ISPI and theMinistry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy within the preparation for the fifth annual International Conference “Mediterranean Dialogues”, that will be held in Rome on December 5–7, 2019. Thus, RIAC makes “Russian” contribution to the preparation of this events among dozens of NGOs from around the world — co-organizers of the conference.

Pasquale Terracciano, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Russia, and Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, spoke at the opening of the seminar, they underscored the need for an objective analysis of the situation in the MENA region in order to unite the efforts of the international community to build an international security system to maintain stability in the region.
ISPI introduced an international team of experts at the seminar, including representatives from Great Britain (Galip Dalay, University of Oxford), France (Dorothee Schmid, IFRI), Iraq (Dlawer Ala’Aldeen, MERI, Erbil), Italy (Armando Barucco, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Eleonora Tafuro Ambrosetii, ISPI; Arturo Varvelli, ISPI; Eugenio Dacrema, University of Trento), Spain (Haizam Amirah-Fernandez, Elcano Royal Institute), the USA (William F.Wechslertl, Atlantic Council), Switzerland (Robert Watkins, DCAF, Geneva), and Belgium (Joost Hiltermann, International Crisis Group).
The Russian side was represented by RIAC members and experts — representatives of Russian academic institutions (Vasily Kuznetsov, Vladimir Sazhin, Veniamin Popov, Nikolay Surkov, Alexander Shumilin), Russian universities (Grigory Lukyanov, Andrey Chuprygin, Vladimir Bartenev), and representatives of NGOs (Alexey Malashenko, Yury Barmin, Maxim Suchkov, Nataliya Zaiser).
RIAC plans to hold an international seminar in the context of preparation for the annual international conference “Mediterranean Dialogues” in 2020.
