September 4, 2019, in London, RUSI headquarters hosted the first seminar of the
new cycle. It focused on the analysis of Russia’s and the UK policies in Africa.
The participants of the seminar discussed political, economic, and military
interests of Russia and the United Kingdom in African countries, analyzed the
effects of the soft power performed by Russia and the United Kingdom on the
African continent, and the institutions of both countries to promote soft
power.
RIAC started the fourth cycle of the bilateral Russia-UK security project. RIAC partner in the project is the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). As part of the fourth cycle, four seminars will be held focusing on topical issues for Russia and the United Kingdom.
On September 4, 2019, in London, RUSI headquarters hosted the first seminar of the new cycle. It focused on the analysis of Russia’s and the UK policies in Africa. The participants of the seminar discussed political, economic, and military interests of Russia and the United Kingdom in African countries, analyzed the effects of the soft power performed by Russia and the United Kingdom on the African continent, and the institutions of both countries to promote soft power. A separate block of issues was related to countering terrorism and opportunities for cooperation between Russia and the UK. A joint report with recommendations on the possibilities for cooperation between Russia and the United Kingdom in Africa will be presented following the discussion.
The seminar was attended by leading experts from RAS Institute for African Studies, headed by academician Alexey Vasiliev. The British side, in addition to RUSI experts, was represented by experts from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), representatives of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), and representatives of the Control Risks Group.
The Russian delegation at the seminar was headed by Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General. The seminar was attended by Tatyana Bogdasarova, Project Coordinator.
The next seminar of the Russian-British project will be held on October 14, 2019, and will be devoted to maritime security issues.
