The roundtable discussion also covered the effectiveness of current peacekeeping operations and distinctive features of approaches to peacekeeping in the Global South. In addition to the history of Soviet peacekeeping efforts, the participants looked at the pressing challenges to Russian peacekeeping activities at present. The participants examined peacekeeping as a practical application of strong-arm diplomacy in international relations and the importance of coordination between the three pillars of a peacekeeping mission.
They also addressed shifts in Western positions in the Sahel region in the past two years and took stock of the peacekeeping record in Mali.
The roundtable discussion also featured the presentation of collective monograph “Peacekeeping in a Multipolar World,” edited by S.A. Bokeria and D.A. Degteryov and released in 2024. Selected chapters of the monograph focus on peacekeeping operations in Africa and peacekeeping in the Global South. The monograph will be of interest to international security experts as well as civilian, military and police personnel of peacekeeping missions.
