On February 13–14, 2017, a round table “Rethinking Asia: Silk Road Economic Belt — the search for common security interests between the EU and China” was held in Tutzing (Germany). The aim of the event was to discuss the report prepared jointly by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Germany) and the SIPRI (Sweden) — “The Silk Road Economic Belt: Considering security implications and EU-China cooperation projects.”
On February 13–14, 2017, a round table “Rethinking Asia: Silk Road Economic Belt — the search for common security interests between the EU and China” was held in Tutzing (Germany). The aim of the event was to discuss the report prepared jointly by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Germany) and the SIPRI (Sweden) — “The Silk Road Economic Belt: Considering security implications and EU-China cooperation projects.”
The event covered various topics including security threats, which may be reduced by the SREB initiative, as well as the new challenges, which may be potentially sparked by this project in the regions of Central and South Asia. The participants also discussed the implications of the SREB project for those states, whose territory will be transited by the “Silk Road” as well as the possibility of forming multilateral cooperation formats within the framework of the Chinese initiative.
The event was attended by experts from China, the EU, Russia, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Pakistan as well as from a number of international organizations such as the OSCE, Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and the European External Action Service (Ambassador Peter Burian, Special Representative of the European Union for Central Asian Affairs). RIAC was represented by Elena Alekseenkova, Program Manager, and RIAC expert Igor Denisov.
