On November 9, 2015, RIAC was the venue for the rollout ceremony of monograph “Conflicts and Wars of the 21st Century: Middle East and North Africa” presented to the audience by Academic Advisor of RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Vitaly Naumkin, a RIAC member, and Dina Malysheva, Chief Researcher of the same institute. The authors analyzed the conflict dynamics in the Palestine, Iraq, West Sahara, Lebanon and Syria against the backdrop of the security problems, focusing on the Islamic factor and influence of radical ideologies and movements. The event was attended by officials from Russian Foreign Ministry, experts and journalists.

Opening remarks of RIAC President Igor Ivanov and the book presentation were followed by a discussion with participation of Chief Research Fellow of RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Boris Dolgov, Director of MGIMO Center for Partnership of Civilizations Veneamin Popov, Director of MGIMO Analytical Center Andrey Kazantsev, Chief Researcher of RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Irene Zvyagelskaya, Assistant Professor of Foreign Region and Foreign Policy Studies Chair at Russia University for Humanities Sergey Markedonov, Chief Researcher of Center for Studies of Eastern Problems at RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Vladimir Akhmedov, Director of Foreign Policy Planning Department at Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Tokovinin, Chief Researcher at RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Elena Melkumyan, Acedemic Secretary of RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Alexander Demchenko, Director of Israel Department at RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Tatiana Karasova, Director of Middle East Research at MGIMO Andrey Fedorchenko, Leading Researcher of RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Alexander Yakovlev, Head of Academic Publications at RAS Institute for Oriental Studies Alexei Sarabyev, Ambassador Andrey Vdovin, Special Representative of Russian Foreign Minister on Middle East Settlement (2001-2003). The debate was moderated by Vassily Kuznetsov, Head of Center for Arabic and Islamic Studies at RAS Institute for Oriental Studies.
Summing up the discussion, Dr. Ivanov stressed the significance of multilateral diplomacy for Syrian settlement: “If we create a multilateral mechanism, the dialogue with Western countries may come back, maybe to help developing elements of a future world order. A comprehensive approach seems the only viable option.”
