On June 16, 2016, the Russian International Affairs Council received Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister of Islm Hekmat Khalil Karzai for an event with participation of key Russian experts from academic institutes, MGIMO, Higher School of Economics, NGOs, Russian Foreign Ministry, Afghani Embassy and journalists. In his opening remarks Mr. Karzai expanded on his country’s military, economic and political environment, as well as on transition to a stable development pattern for Afghanistan and the entire region, with special attention given to support rendered to Afghanistan by Russia, the U.S., Iran, India and other countries, and opportunities opened by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to its members, observers and partners.

Moderated by RIAC Program Director Ivan Timofeyev, the discussants focused on the military-political situation in Afghanistan, South and Central Asia, security challenges, terrorism, and intergovernmental relations in the region.
Mr. Karzai also answered a number of questions on crisis settlement, improvement of trust between interested actors and the relevant role of international organizations, as well as prospects of the CASA-1000 and TAPI projects.
The invitees declared readiness to advance their cooperation, stressing the importance of the Track 2 level.
